ARBEC - The Story
Who were the people in this success
story?
ARBEC's success can be
attributed to two dynamic individuals who had the expertise and the
foresight to develop ARBEC, right from conceptualising to the actual
setting up of ARBEC into what it is today.
Although in such an undertaking
there are many who have contributed to ARBEC, from the researchers to the
editors, but without doubt the two persons who stand out are
Professor Ghazally Ismail and Mr. Lim Kooi Fong.
As a tireless worker championing
efforts to improve research in biodiversity in Malaysia and in the region,
Professor Ghazally has published a number of influential works, such as The Scientific
Expedition series (to Sayap Kinabalu, Tawau Hills, Bario etc).
Professor
Ghazally's input has been critical in ensuring the success of ARBEC. Aside
from being the main content provider, his vast network of personal
contacts enabled the editors of ARBEC to access key research figures from
in and around the region. It was mainly through his network that a rich
body of information was gathered and maintained until today.
Mr Lim Kooi Fong's
contribution to ARBEC is mainly in the community development aspect. He
basically headed a five person team in content acquisition, community
training and promotion programmes. The team virtually formulated ARBEC's
platform through its online forum, content packaging and smart databases.
Lim was also fundamentally responsible in marketing
its content through ARBEC's appointed subscription agents based in
Frankfurt, London and New York. With a publishing background, he has the
grasp of the workings of the world of publishing.
